Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why is a new curling facility needed?
The current facility is not large enough to meet community demands. We have to turn school classes, new leagues and potential tournaments away because we simply do not have the space to accommodate them.
What is the cost & how will it be funded?
The total project cost is $3.2 million. Thanks to a generous commitment from the City of Willmar, land has been secured to serve as the location for the new community curling center. Glacial Ridge Curling will supply the equipment and has set a capital campaign goal of $3.2 million. Community members, foundations, and others will be asked to contribute to support.
How will Glacial Ridge sustain the space long-term?
Glacial Ridge relies on the support of its members to ensure we can cover operational costs. Our business plan includes a diverse mix of revenue to keep the doors open. In addition to retaining and attracting members, we will host and coordinate events and seek support from generous individuals, businesses and foundations who share our passion for curling as a community connector.
Who will benefit from the space?
This will be a welcoming, accessible, multi-functional, all-season facility. Curling is for people of all ages and abilities. It requires little training or financial investment to get started, yet its strategic nature makes curling an enjoyable and challenging lifetime sport. Curling’s multi-generational appeal makes it a perfect family activity, and it is a great way for people of all fitness levels to stay active year-round.
In addition to serving youth, members, leagues, families, and participants in our adaptive program, we will partner with organizations and businesses in the community who would like to rent the versatile space for special space for special events.
This new community space will add to the already-growing base of amenities that attracts new people to our region. Further, the new curling facility will help position Willmar as an attractive host city for regional and national tournaments, which will bring visitors to our area to support local businesses.
